Register September 4, 1994 Section A Page 1 The $100,000 club in Alabama Stallings is highest paid state employee, and four UAB health officials each top $200,000 annual salary By PETE ZURALES Staff Reporter President Frederick Whiddon heads a list of 70 state employees at the University of South Alabama who make $100,000 a year or more, records show. The USA group, mostly department heads or professors in the College of Medicine, joins at least 373 state employees who reach or exceed the $100,000 benchmark, a Mobile Register survey found. The leader is Gene Stallings, Alabama's head football coach, at $556,310. Stallings gets a base salary of $126,310. The university also pays him $430,000 under a talent and personal services contract. The money comes from an athletic shoe company and broadcasting fees. Four health officials at the University of Alabama at Birmingham earn more than $200,000 a year. University employees are paid by their respective schools, but are state employees who come under the state's retirement plan. At the top among employees directly on the state payroll are the heads of the Retirement Systems of Alabama: David G. Bronner at $176,800 and William Walsh at $152,412. Others are state school Superintendent Wayne Teague at $148,035, and state Health Officer Donald E. Williamson, at $141,750. The comparison of salaries was drawn from records of universities, the state Finance Department and the Retirement Systems of Alabama. A majority of those on the list 53 percent are doctors, medical school professors and other health professionals. The list includes Mobile's medical examiners Dr. Gregory P. Wanger and Dr. Leroy Riddick. It doesn't include professors of basic sciences, such as biology, physiology and biomathematics. USA's Whiddon receives a base salary of $169,404 plus a housing and car allowance of $28,521, for a total of $197,925, university spokesman George Smith said. Two medical school department heads are the next highest-paid at USA. They are Frank S. Pettyjohn, at $159,964, and Steven R. Goodman, at $143,609. Samuel J. Strada, dean of the College of Medicine, earns $141,955. USA has 67 members of its medical school who make at least $100,000; UAB has 152. ``We're very lean on administration,'' Smith said. Strong salaries are needed to compete in the market place, he said. ``Engineers with Ph.D.s can make a lot of money in the corporate world,'' said Smith. ``If you want the best, you have to pay the price. I wouldn't want to hire a heart surgeon who would take half what everyone else is making. I'd at least want to know why he'd want to do that.'' At UAB, the four making at least $200,000 a year are: David G. Whitten, director of the new managed health care program, $230,000. Kevin E. Lofton, associate vice president for health affairs and executive director and chief executive officer, $229,600. Gerald M. Pohost, director of the cardiovascular division at UAB hospital, $203,644. Albert F. Lobugligo, an hematologist and oncologist at UAB hospital, $201,425. ``You have to look at what the market bears,'' Lofton said. UAB hospital ``is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country.'' UAB is widely known for research into cancer and heart transplants. ``Our incredible growth has been attributed to good leadership, and good leadership requires an investment,'' UAB spokesman Mike Ellis said. ``We're attracting international patients.'' UAB's medical school salaries are in line with regional averages, while USA's salaries are below average, according to figures compiled by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Average salaries for professors of medicine are $144,100 in the Northeast, $159,600 in the Midwest, $136,500 in the South, and $117,400 in the West, said association spokeswoman Martha Frase-Blunt. Those are certainly good salaries, she conceded, but they're not what doctors in private practice make. ``People don't go into academic medicine for the money,'' said Ms. Frase-Blunt. ``They can do much better in the private sector.'' Alabama basketball coach David Hobbs makes $256,172. Hobbs earns a base university salary of $101,172 but gets $155,000 from the personal services contract, said Bob Wright, the university's vice president for financial affairs. USA basketball coach Ronnie Arrow gets a base salary of $120,502, Smith said. He also has a shoe contract, but Arrow declined to say what it was worth. Alabama Athletic Director Cecil ``Hootie'' Ingram earns $137,500 from his university salary and receives $50,000 from the personal services contract, for a total of $187,500. Terry Bowden, Auburn University's head football coach, is paid a base salary of $115,780, but his outside income like those of Auburn's other coaches is from private deals and is not state-paid. Larry White, Alabama sports information director, said Alabama's policy on the guaranteed contract is based on recommendations of the NCAA and the presidents' association. ``Those entities have asked institutions to exercise more control over those types of issues. And that's the way we have chosen to do it,'' he said. He said the policy has been in effect since Stallings was named head coach in January 1990. Auburn men's basketball coach Cliff Ellis earns $100,780 and women's basketball coach Joe Ciampi makes $100,880 from their base salaries, university officials said. Gene Bartow, athletic director and men's basketball coach at UAB, gets a base salary of $126,269. Besides Whiddon, other educator-executives who have doctorate degrees also make six-figure salaries. Alabama System Chancellor Philip Austin makes $184,000. He's followed by former UAB President Charles A. McCallum. McCallum, a dentist who sees patients and who is a special assistant to the school president, makes $182,000. Auburn President William V. Muse makes $166,400, and Alabama President Roger Sayers makes $165,750. They get housing and cars. UAB President J. Claude Bennett makes $169,000, and University of Alabama in Huntsville President Frank Franz makes $133,500 plus a car and an annual housing allowance of $30,000.
